The Grammar Doctor has always been interested in words and language. In
her childhood, she was the youngest person in Houston, Texas, ever to be issued a library
card in her own name. The criterion was being able to write her name. She was four years
old and already reading.
Fast-forward to her adulthood. Beginning
her career as a high school English teacher, The Grammar Doctor eventually earned a Ph.D.
in English from the University of North Texas, where she was fortunate enough to study
under Mary Evelyn Whitten, late editor of the Harbrace College Handbook. During her career
in college teaching, she was nicknamed "The Grammar Doctor."
During her years as a college English professor, The Grammar Doctor wrote
a weekly column on language for the now-defunct Dallas Times Herald. In 1992, she opted to
retire from teaching and launch a consulting business. The Grammar Doctor now writes for a
number of publications, conducts stand-up business writing training for corporations, does
private coaching for professionals whose native language is not English, and edits almost
anythingfrom menus to scientific reportsfor a wide variety of clients,
including a number of Fortune 500 companies and a lot of little fish as well. All this
work feeds her passion about the English language and sometimes wears her out.
